Reviving Rawls’ Linguistic Analogy: Operative Principles and the Causal Structure of Moral Actions

چکیده
The thesis we develop in this essay is that all humans are endowed with a moral faculty. The moral faculty enables us to produce moral judgments on the basis of the causes and consequences of actions. As an empirical research program, we follow the framework of modern linguistics. 1 The spirit of the argument dates back at least to the economist Adam Smith (1759/1976) who argued for something akin to a moral grammar, and more recently, to the political philosopher John Rawls (1971). The logic of the argument, however, comes from Noam Chomsky's thinking on language specifically and the nature of knowledge If the nature of moral knowledge is comparable in some way to the nature of linguistic knowledge, as defended recently by Harman (1977), Dwyer (1999, 2004) and Mikhail (2000; in prep.), then what should we expect to find when we look at the anatomy of our moral faculty? Is there a grammar and if so, how can the moral grammarian uncover its structure? Are we aware of our moral grammar, its method of operation

Moral Theory : the Linguistic Analogy
Analogies are often theoretically useful. Important principles of electricity are suggested by an analogy between water flowing through a pipe and electricity “flowing” through a wire, with voltage corresponding to pressure, amperage corresponding to the current, and so on. A basic theory of sound is suggested by an analogy between waves caused by a stone being dropped into a still lake and “so...
متن کاملIs Morality an Elegant Machine or a Kludge?1
In a passage in A Theory of Justice, which has become increasingly influential in recent years, John Rawls (1971) noted an analogy between moral philosophy and grammar. Moral philosophy, or at least the first stage of moral philosophy, Rawls maintained, can be thought of as the attempt to describe our moral capacity – the capacity which underlies “the potentially infinite number and variety of ...
متن کاملUniversal moral grammar: a critical appraisal.
A new framework for the study of the human moral faculty is currently receiving much attention: the so-called 'universal moral grammar' framework. It is based on an intriguing analogy, first pointed out by Rawls, between the study of the human moral sense and Chomsky's research program into the human language faculty. To assess UMG, we ask: is moral competence modular? Does it have an underlyin...
متن کاملTwo Proposals for Causal Grammars
In the previous chapter (Tenenbaum, Griffiths, & Niyogi, this volume), we introduced a framework for thinking about the structure, function, and acquisition of intuitive theories inspired by an analogy to the research program of generative grammar in linguistics. We argued that a principal function for intuitive theories, just as for grammars for natural languages, is to generate a constrained ...
متن کاملPragmatic Elements of Rawls’s Theory of Justice
In this article, in order to demonstrate the pragmatic elements of Rawls’s viewpoint, the developmental path of his A Theory of Justice shall first be investigated. This development has two phases: In the first phase, justice has an ethical-philosophical basis. In A Theory of Justice, this phase is specifically shown under the title of theory of justice. In the second phase, justice has no phil...
